On the Bucket List: Top French Chateaux Hotels

by Elio May 20, 2015

If staying at a Château set in the rolling hills of France isn’t on your bucket list it’s high time you added it.

Château is a French word that means castle or palace and when you book a stay at a Château hotel you’ll actually be staying in a magnificent and typically historic estate. If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to be a king or queen, a stay in one of the many historic - is worth the extra splurge. Since most have only a limited number of rooms, the higher price offers rooms fitted in period decor, luxurious strolling gardens, high-class dining and total privacy. Plus, we think there’s nothing more romantic than a stay in an authentic French Château!

To help you choose your adventure, we’ve made a list of some of our favourite Châteaux hotels in France in the beautiful regions of Champagne, Normandy, Brittany, Loire Valley and Provence.

Château de Rilly, Rilly-la-Montagne, Champagne

Inspiring you to enjoy a glass of Champagne in the rolling hills of Champagne, Château de Rilly is one of our favorite Châteaux hotels because of its larger than life vintage appeal. Step back into an era of fancy hats and garden strolls hand-in-hand. Château de Rilly also made our list because of its exceptional restaurant and fine wine list. Enjoy a taste of fine wine while at dinner or relax with a glass in the 19th-century drawing room with new friends. Decorated with period furniture and art, Your accommodations and museum in one; spend an afternoon exploring every corner and imagining life as it was in years past.

Once you step into this enchanting world, you’ll likely never want to leave.

Château de Pommeraye, La Pommeraye, Normandy

Château de Pommeraye scored a spot on our list of great Châteaux in France because of its romantic flair. The renovation of the Château by its host, Alexandre, has resulted in a luxurious yet comfortable feel of a grand French palace. Secluded from the outside world is also a major perk at this Château, especially for those looking to totally escape and slip into solitude. We also love the opportunities to add a bit of adventure to the daily relaxation. Horse riding, hiking and paragliding are just a few of the ways to discover Normandy’s exciting side.

Because of its exceptional pairing of romance and adventure, we ranked Château de Pommeraye as one of our favorite Normandy Châteaux Hotels.

Château de la Ballue, Bazouges-la-Pérouse, Brittany

Château de la Ballue is renowned for its fantastical and inspiring gardens. These gardens are so well-known they’ve attracted well-known artists and even celebrities from the region and beyond to come and admire their beauty and discover the inspiration they seek. They’ve been the muse to many artists and are now waiting to inspire you. There’s even a maze called the Labyrinth that will stimulate the mind and senses.

We love this Château not just for its gardens but also for its setting in a 17th century castle that is also historical monument.

Château de la Barre, Conflans sur Anille, Loire Valley

We’re not the only ones that have Château de la Barre on a top rated list - this family-run Château is also listed as one of the highest rated Châteaux by the Sunday Times and we aren’t surprised. We immediately fell in love with the hosts, Guy and Marnie, who welcome you into their Château with true grace. They’ve created an atmosphere of warmth and luxury.

Our favorite part is the royal French style meals served on antique crystal and china. With a combination of sheer hospitality and luxurious accommodations, Château de la Barre is a must-visit in Loire Valley.

Villa Baulieu, Rognes, Provence

Set in an Italian-style Villa, we found Villa Baulieu exceptional because of its original, 17th-century charm. With stunning chandeliers in almost every room and world-class decor, you’ll immediately feel as though you’ve been crowned royalty. We love the stunning views of Provence including vineyards and orchards. We also love the incredible gardens that are ideal for an afternoon of relaxation.

With a unique mix of Italian and French Tradition, Villa Baulieu was an easy choice for our list of the best-of-the-best.
