Leaf peeping in France. In autumn the gardens of the Domaine de la Tortinière tend to go from green to a sparkling variety of yellows and reds, while pink and white cyclamens blanket the surrounding woodlands of the French Chateau.
Rooms: 30 continuously renovated rooms and suites, spread between the chateau and the two small manor houses. In the summer opt for the rooms in the manor houses, which actually predate the chateau, to fully enjoy the grounds.
Bar: Cosy lounge with crackling fire, dimmed lights and billiard table for the setting, and the best local wines, Cognacs and Armagnacs on the menu.
Restaurant: The Restaurant du Domaine de la Tortinière, headed by chef David Chartier, is a brilliant tribute to the Touraine gastronomy – with a twist. Try the Marigny de Marmande truffles, pork and veal nems with horseradish Chantilly, or the smoked veal tartar and quail eggs.
Pool: Outdoor swimming pool (and tennis courts).
