Iconic riad hotel soaked in blue of ocean and sky, brainchild of Swiss-Moroccan couple Cornelia and Abderahim.

A SLOW-CHIC EXPERIENCE

Morocco's first riad hotel, originally catering for surfers, has grown up since it first opened some twenty-five years ago. The Villa Maroc in Essaouira is an ingenious knock-together of four Medina townhouses, all white and deep blue adorned, with a labyrinthine warren of courtyards and passages leading from one house to another.

Inside, dimly lit antiques are adorned with fine Moroccan textiles and fresh roses, while potteries of all size show off their beautifully coloured curves.

Open year round.

Double rooms start from 120 € per night. Use the calendar to find the rate and availability on a specific date and to book online.

WE LOVE

  • The location. Just off Essaouira’s immense beach, at the entrance of the medina, and just steps away from the fishing port.
  • The breezy terrace. Colourfully furnished and with fabulous views over the vast sandy beach and the ocean.
  • The spa. A traditional Moroccan hammam, complete with a range of body treatments and massages.

DON'T MISS

  • La Joutia. Local auction taking place in the souks daily at 17.00. You probably won’t take part in it, but simple watching is a real spectacle.
  • Learn to cook with a local at AFBK. An association that help vulnerable womens to independently earn their living and find a place in the society (+212 524 476 533).
  • Restaurant Sirocco. Characterful setting, tasteful dishes and cheerful live music in the heart of  the theatrical medina (+212 524 472 396).

THE BEST BIT

Dinner at the Villa Maroc. In the evening the house really comes into its own - a delicious intimacy descends. There is no dining room as such at the Villa Maroc, but plenty of small and interconnecting lounges, niches and fireside hideaways. And there's more, the food is delicious. Each day there is one fish, one meat and one vegetarian option. Owner Cornelia takes her inspiration from Essaouira's daily markets and neighbouring fishing port. Expect utterly fresh produce and exceptionally tasteful dishes.

Breakfast: Usually served on the roof terrace facing the ocean, the breakfast is a feast of Moroccan homemade specialities – as well as the continental classics.
