Iconic riad hotel soaked in blue of ocean and sky, brainchild of Swiss-Moroccan couple Cornelia and Abderahim.
Morocco's first riad hotel, originally catering for surfers, has grown up since it first opened some twenty-five years ago. The Villa Maroc in Essaouira is an ingenious knock-together of four Medina townhouses, all white and deep blue adorned, with a labyrinthine warren of courtyards and passages leading from one house to another.
Inside, dimly lit antiques are adorned with fine Moroccan textiles and fresh roses, while potteries of all size show off their beautifully coloured curves.
Open year round.
Double rooms start from 120 € per night. Use the calendar to find the rate and availability on a specific date and to book online.
Dinner at the Villa Maroc. In the evening the house really comes into its own - a delicious intimacy descends. There is no dining room as such at the Villa Maroc, but plenty of small and interconnecting lounges, niches and fireside hideaways. And there's more, the food is delicious. Each day there is one fish, one meat and one vegetarian option. Owner Cornelia takes her inspiration from Essaouira's daily markets and neighbouring fishing port. Expect utterly fresh produce and exceptionally tasteful dishes.
Rooms: 21 rooms and suites – all different in shape, size and décor. Set around the four patios, the rooms and suites of the Villa Maroc Essaouira have in common crisp white walls and traditional furniture. Suite 30, (unusual for a riad) looks outwards over Essaouira's harbour.
Breakfast: Usually served on the roof terrace facing the ocean, the breakfast is a feast of Moroccan homemade specialities – as well as the continental classics.
Bar & Restaurant: Yes, that’s the best bit.
